In Office Romance, a loud and obnoxious group of workers dressed, significantly, in uniform gray robes invade the office in which two intelligentsia characters are engaged in a highly personal conversation. When the latter protest and insist that the group should respect individuals’ privacy, the collective hero first disregards them and then tells them that they are following orders from above to take stock of the office furniture. Furniture matters, while humans, especially “people of intellectual labor” (rabotniki umstvennogo truda), as one of the gray-robed characters pejoratively calls them, might want to take their business elsewhere (see Figure 3.3).
